Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Deepak Chahar is absent from the playing XI in today’s crucial 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This high-stakes encounter is taking place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 18.
Chahar last appeared in the tournament during a home game against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 1. During that match, the right-arm pacer suffered a hamstring injury while bowling his first over and had to leave the field. The CSK head coach later confirmed that the injury was serious, and Chahar has not played since.
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed Chahar’s absence and announced only one forced change in the lineup.
“We’ll bowl first. The wicket looks good, conditions are overcast, and we aim to make the most of the early movement. It looks a bit damp, but we’ll go with great intent. Every game in the IPL is a must-win; nothing changes for us. We’ll take it ball-by-ball and try to win the small processes. We’ve won some crucial games to stay ahead in the middle of the pack. Just one change – Moeen isn’t available, Santner replaces him,” Gaikwad said after losing the toss.
Despite not being ruled out of the tournament, Chahar is not fit enough to play in the final league match. He has been seen bowling in the nets, suggesting he might participate in the playoffs if CSK qualifies.
Chahar has taken five wickets in eight outings in IPL 2024. This season has been relatively forgettable for him. Usually reliable with the new ball due to his ability to swing it during the powerplay, he has largely been ineffective this time around.
Chahar’s statistics reflect his struggles: he has played eight matches, picking up only five wickets at an average of 40.40 and an economy rate of 8.60. He has managed just one wicket in his last four appearances, highlighting his ongoing challenges.
