In a historic upset, Team India lost the third ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo by 110 runs, resulting in a 2-0 series defeat. This marks India’s first series loss to Sri Lanka since 1997.

Following a victorious T20I series against the hosts, a revamped Team India entered the ODI series with high hopes. Led by Rohit Sharma, the team aimed to continue their winning momentum but fell short of expectations.

A Promising Start Ends in a Tie

The series opener saw India restrict Sri Lanka to 230 runs in 50 overs. Rohit Sharma led the chase with a commanding performance, significantly reducing the target for the middle order. However, the middle order faltered, losing wickets in clusters, leading to a dramatic tie as India was bowled out for exactly 230.

Spin Troubles in the Second ODI

In the second ODI, India’s batting lineup crumbled against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. Once Rohit Sharma was dismissed, the team struggled to build partnerships. Jeffrey Vandersay spearheaded the spin assault, leading Sri Lanka to a 32-run victory.

A Crushing Defeat in the Decider

The decisive third ODI mirrored the previous struggles. India managed to limit Sri Lanka to 248/7 in their 50 overs. Despite a solid start, India’s batting collapsed from 53/2 to 101/8. Washington Sundar showed some resistance, but his efforts were not enough as India was all out for 138, losing by a staggering 110 runs.

Revisiting 1997: The Last Series Loss to Sri Lanka

The last time India lost an ODI series to Sri Lanka was in 1997. Under the leadership of Sachin Tendulkar, the team faced a tough tour. Despite having stars like Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, India narrowly lost the first game by two runs while chasing 302. In the second game, Sri Lanka successfully chased down 238, securing an unassailable series lead.

India came close in the final match but suffered another narrow defeat, losing by nine runs and conceding the series 3-0.

This recent series defeat is a stark reminder of the challenges faced in international cricket, reigniting memories of past struggles against the Lankan Lions.
